Austria to temporarily suspend all Procedures for granting Right of Asylum

Austrian minister Mikl-Leitner has effectively suspended all asylum procedures albeit temporarily. Focus shall be laid on deportation of illegals.

Following landslide victories of anti-immigration party FPÖ and mass protests by concerned Austrians during regional elections, the government has reacted. However, the exact reasons as to why minister Mikl-Leitner suddenly and unexpectedly announced the step to effectively stop all asylum procedures will remain unclear.

In its sudden move, the Austrian government announced that it will focus on the until now forgotten or neglected Dublin regulation. The net benefits for Austria will be evident: Drastically reduced numbers of illegal immigrants, at least for some time.

Under that treaty, refugees, which enter any european country via another EU country, can be legally deported to that country where they first entered the European Union.

The austrian pendant to the ministry of the interiors stated, that:

“The law provides an opportunity, to temporarily align the asylum procedures to the current circumstances”.

Translated from law lingo, this effectively means adherence to the Dublin regulation and sharply decreased asylum numbers. It took Austria some time to leave behind an asylum politics, which until now could only be described as chaotic. But it did not come too soon for those Austrians, which took their anger to the ballots and to the streets.

The landslide victories of the FPÖ during local elections allowed anti immigration topics gained momentum across Austria. People even took to the streets to voice their concern about mass immigration. As an example, angry citizens took to the streets in Vienna, where 500 - 800 people demonstrated against Austria’s out-of-control asylum policy.

The 500 to 800 people demonstrated against their home town Traiskirchen being being swamped and vandalized by refugees. The town is home to an emergency asylum accommodation center, whose residents have been a constant source of trouble. The centre has even been compared to a “powder keg” and the behaviour of the immigrants made local citizens feel so unsafe that demands were made to have security guards protect the local children.

This is a victory for Austria and gives hope for the rest of europe - if Europeans take action they can move mountains. The political change in Austria fueled by the will of the people goes to show that we still can take our countries back.
